How to recognize this tactic
A trapped piece has no safe square. Spot an enemy piece that has wandered offside or been hemmed in, then play the move that takes away its last escape and wins it — often a quiet pawn push or a covering minor piece.
General method: before you move, list the forcing candidates — every check, every capture, every direct threat — and calculate those first. The solution to a tactic is almost always among them.
Position sur l'échiquier
Blancs : roi g1, dame a7, tour b1 d1, fou g2 e3, cavalier b5, pion h2 b3 f3 g3 a4 c4 e4.
Noirs : roi g8, dame d8, tour b8 f8, fou e6 g7, cavalier c5, pion b6 d6 g6 e7 f7 h7.
The position in numbers
White are ahead by 1 points of material (35 against 34; pawn = 1, knight and bishop = 3, rook = 5, queen = 9) — the tactic has to convert or outweigh that.
The white king stands on g1, the black king on g8.
It is Black to move on move 18, with 37 legal replies to weigh — only the line that keeps the advantage solves the puzzle.
White keeps 7 pawns, Black 6. No file is fully open, so the heavy pieces have to be pried in. Half-open for Black: a, c.
The Black king has 1 empty squares to step to right now — the fewer they are, the closer a mating net.
Solution et explication
Ligne principale
18... Rb7 19. Qxb7 Nxb7
Pourquoi ça marche
- Excellent coup ! tour en b7 maintient la pression (+3.1).
- Excellent coup ! cavalier en b7 maintient la pression (+3.1).
- Vous gagnez une pièce : dame.
- Si à la place Qxb7, alors Nxb7 et vous gagnez dame.
Move by move
- 18… Rb7 — tour to b7
- 19. Qxb7 — dame to b7 (capture)
- Nxb7 — cavalier to b7 (capture)
Types de ce problème
Coup tranquille
